Original tee from the very first Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, held October 9–10, 1999 at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, California. The inaugural lineup reads like a snapshot of alternative music at the end of the millennium: Beck, The Chemical Brothers, Perry Farrell headlined Saturday, while Rage Against the Machine and Tool topped Sunday’s bill, alongside Pavement, Morrissey, Underworld, Ben Harper, A Perfect Circle, Modest Mouse, Moby, DJ Shadow, Jurassic 5 and dozens more.
Long before Coachella became one of the most influential music festivals in the world, its first edition was a comparatively small and financially unsuccessful experiment. Original merchandise from that inaugural weekend is now exceptionally scarce and represents the true beginning of Coachella history. Featuring festival artwork on the front and the extensive two-day lineup on the back, this is one of those vintage pieces where the history is every bit as good as the graphic.
